dc.description.abstract | Stvarna revolucionarna nastojanja Josifa II odnose se gotovo isključivo na versku toleranciju i na olakšanje legalnih životnih uslova Jevreja. Time je prekinuta ranija tradicija Habsburških vladalaca.
dc.description.abstract | The real revolutionary endeavors of Joseph II relate almost exclusively to religious tolerance and to the relief of the legal living conditions of Jews. This interrupted the earlier tradition of the Habsburg rulers. Namely, the position of the Jews became increasingly difficult from the rule of Leopold I until the death of Maria Theresa. Government orders were increasingly narrowing down the earning potential and living conditions of Jews. In most cities, Jews could not get a permit or spend the night; Joseph II institutionally eased the fate of Jews in the Habsburg Monarchy. The Edict of Tolerance, issued in 1782, concerned only Protestants and Orthodox, but this also opened the way for the emancipation of Jews. The end result came 81 years later when a law of 1861 proclaimed: "The habitants of the state of the Jewish religion declare themselves equal in all civil and political rights with the Christian population". That is the reason that the Jews from Habsburg Monarchy have so much gratitude and respect for Joseph II. The following is a detailed analysis and description of the position and status of Jews in Banat. | en |
