Abstract
Laura Papo was born on March 15, 1891, in Sarajevo. Her father was Judah (Leon) Levi, her mother was Esther. She was the firstborn child and nicknamed Bohoreta. From 1900 to 1908, the family lived in Constantinople. Laura had five sisters and three brothers, of whom Laura and one sister, as well as two brothers, were killed during the fascist riots. Between the two wars, Laura Papo lived and worked in Sarajevo, where her life was tragically ended in 1941. Her two sons, Leon and Barkohba, were killed in Jasenovac. Laura was unusually intelligent and eager for knowledge. She knew several languages: Spanish (ladino), French, German, and partly Turkish, Greek and English. She completed a six-month "Cours de Vacances" in Paris and, after passing the exam, received a Diploma of Superieur from L'Alliance Francaise, which allowed her to teach French and literature.
