Protužidovski izgredi u Zagorju i Zagrebu godine 1883
Anti-Jewish riots in Zagorje and Zagreb in 1883.
Abstract
On August 7, 1883, at about 5 o'clock in the morning, the old plates with the common coat of arms and the Croatian inscription were removed from the financial buildings in Zagreb and replaced with new inscriptions, which in addition to the Croatian had Hungarian inscription. These inscriptions caused great turmoil not only in Zagreb but also in the province. Masses of citizens and peasants opposed a decision that violated the provisions of the Hungarian-Croatian settlement made in 1868. In the Hungarian city of Tisza-Eszlar, it was in those days that the process was conducted over Esther Solymossi, the girl over whom the ritual murder as it had been committed. For months, all the newspapers wrote and harassed ghosts, and momently there were major incidents, especially in Vienna and Pest, where Jewish shops and cafes were regularly destroyed, looted and devastated.
