Abstract
Jelena Demajo was born in 1876. She was among the first women who, after elementary, finished Girl's school. Although she worked as a teacher, she was very committed to opening a women's craft school where girls were taught skills that could earn for living. It significantly influenced the emancipation of women in a prejudiced society and was at the forefront of the "Jewish Women's Society". After the wars, she re-committed herself to humanitarian work and promotion of the craft school, the Women's Society and childcare. She is remembered as a great worker and a great benefactor, and one of the most important women's rights activists in Serbia.
