Introduction With the exhibition titled "Jews in Međimurje," the Museum of Međimurje Čakovec aims to acquaint the Međimurje and Croatian public with the ethnic and religious community that left a profound mark on the economic and social life of Čakovec and Međimurje and is now entirely unnoticed. Jews began systematically settling in Međimurje only in the second half of the 18th century when it became clear that the then-feudal lords, the Czech counts Althan, would permanently leave our region. In Zala County, in all parts except Međimurje, they were already present by the beginning of the 18th century. The Jewish religious community in Čakovec was founded in 1780. Throughout history, it was the only Jewish religious community in Međimurje, gathering Međimurje Jews from Štrigova to Legrad. The construction of the complex of the Jewish religious community in Čakovec began in 1834. It was completed in 1876. Initially, Jews engaged in small trade and artisanship. They gradually accumulated capital, expanded their businesses, and began to invest more systematically. They skillfully took advantage of the decomposition of the feudal system, liberalization, and the gradual construction of civil society institutions. They were the founders of numerous Međimurje savings banks, sitting on their boards of directors and supervisory boards. They directed funds and encouraged the establishment of industrial plants, wholesale trade, and the exploitation of the natural resources of Međimurje. They were respected citizens, doctors, lawyers, officials, artisans, merchants, and workers. Among them were the rich and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, socially engaged individuals, and those dedicated only to their work and family. They were excellent athletes - football players, table tennis players, hazena players, motorcyclists, skiers, and chess players. They enjoyed concerts and theatrical performances and eagerly visited Čakovec cinemas. As donors or amateur actors, singers, dancers, or directors, they shaped the social life of Čakovec, Prelog, and Donja Dubrava. Their civic houses and villas are evidence of a high level of living culture.sr
