Abstract

The novel "The Ashesplace" is based on actual events on the Sava River in Belgrade, especially during March 1943. In this book, the author asks today's key ethical questions, guilt and personal responsibility for crimes in our name, our concepts of moral relations between the executioner and the victim, and collective memory and forgiveness. "The Ashesplace" is the story of a shameful event that was kept silent for over 70 years, and is not talked about enough even today. It is a warning from our history, from a time when not only human life lost its value, but also the memory of it. The novel does not offer a revision of official historiography, it is an authentic, disturbing testimony of evil and greed, but also of love and sacrifice. The main character of the book, Gavrilo Seferović, does not want to, like the others, turn his head and look away, he does not want and cannot forget his loved ones, friends, and neighbours. His decision represents not only the courage of a former offic...er but the only possible act worthy of a man. An act devoid of any ideology.
