Abstract
This paper attempts to illustrate the ways in which various influences of the National Socialist past and ideology manifest themselves again both within a culturally and historically defined sphere and after a certain period of time in relation to the daily social life of the same community. The backbone of this research is the notion of discourse as a body of oral and written texts around a particular theme which emerged after the end of the Second World War. In terms of methodology, this paper also draws on memory studies as well as on what is known as “working through the past”. The novel “Old Masters” by the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard, published in 1985, was used as the corpus. This research belongs to the field of literary studies with an emphasis on German-language literature along with cultural studies and sociology.
