Abstract

In our country, in 2003, the Day of European Jewish Culture was marked for the first time. This cultural event was established in 1999. The theme that has been proposed as the motto of this year's events, in many European centres, is Judaism and art. In the works of artists in the former Yugoslavia, Jewish themes were very rarely represented. Although there were many Jews among Yugoslav painters, very talented and successful painters, they rarely illustrated this topic. Of the Belgrade painters, only Leon Koen illustrated themes such as Eternal Judas, Joseph's Dream, and the Pogrom at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is difficult to find works on this topic with the painters Moša Pijada, Marko Čelebonović, Bora Baruh, Rajko Levi. In Belgrade's paintings and sculptures after the Second World War, the theme of suffering in the Holocaust is present in the works of Jewish artists. Several painters of the younger generation illustrated the theme of Kabbalah, which will be shown at... the next exhibitions of the Jewish Historical Museum.
