Abstract

Rabbi Dr. Joseph Leopold Deutsch states that the interpretation of the Holy Scriptures in the Jewish world has always belonged to the domain of religious public service. The interpretation of the Holy Scriptures has a double goal - to introduce the audience to the content of the Holy Scriptures and to encourage and strengthen the sense of duty towards God and people. Dr. Deutsch explains several historical moments that led to the need to interpret the Scriptures - the 70-year life of the Jews in Babylon when they completely forgot their Hebrew language and the simplified translation of the Scriptures into Aramaic. When knowledge of the Bible and its language became publicly available, Jews were no longer content with a simplified translation but sought a way to become even more familiar with the most important religious and ethical topics. As a result of this aspiration, schools (Beth ha-midrash) were established in which the Bible was taught and the content and language of the Scriptu...res were analyzed. Every single word was deeply thought about and discussed, so in time the Midrash was formed, and then the Mishnah and the Talmud. This literature is admirable because, in addition to containing a lot of spirit and knowledge, it is unique due to the fact that it was created during the most severe persecutions and inhuman torture of the Jewish people. Dr. Deutsch lists four ways of clarifying and interpreting the Holy Scriptures for which the acronym Pardes is used: 1) Peshat - interpretation of the text of the Bible according to the literal meaning; 2) Remez - the text of the Bible in relation to certain biblical events that are inferred from the text; 3) Derash - free development and addition of thoughts to the text of the Holy Scriptures and 4) Sod - presentation of heavenly and metaphysical mysteries which are hints in the biblical text. To clarify the process of interpretation based on Pardes, Dr. Deutsch analyzes several well-known biblical texts and concludes that Scripture can only be understood if it is thoroughly studied.
