Abstract
In the story "Emperors gratitude", Cantor Aaron Kishicky writes about memories of his yeshiva teacher (Talmudic school), Rabbi Shmerl ben Jockl. Wittily evoking the teacher's pedagogical methods, he also remembers his calligraphic skills for which he was unfairly imprisoned and punished. Although the theme of the story refers to secret desires and betrayed expectations, the story at the same time faithfully shows the life and position of Jews in Russia.
