This work focuses on the role of polyphonic singing in interethnic communication in the example of the Serbian-Jewish Baruch Brothers Choir from Belgrade. This choir was founded in 1879 as the Serbian-Jewish Singing Society, and it got its current name in 1952. The choir managed to survive all the wars and social changes which marked the tumultuous Serbian history from the late 19th century until today. The suffering of the Belgrade Jewish community in WWII inflicted by the German Nazi occupiers drastically reduced its number, and consequently there were fewer Jewish choir members. Today its members are mostly Serbian, but there are also other nationalities. The choir members sing Jewish songs regardless of their national or religious belonging, and thus contribute to the fostering of Jewish culture. The choir repertoire contains works of Jewish and Serbian spiritual and secular music as well as works of some worldly known authors. The choir members endeavor to overcome ethnic, religio...us, and political barriers through their musical communication. In this way they are showing their willingness to accept differences and build tolerant relations.
