The settlement of the Jews of Split from ancient to the present times has taken place depending on historical circumstances. They came from various parts of the world, from the east, west, and north. Jews from the east, from Byzantium and from the Balkan Peninsula, were called the Levantini, those from the Pyrenees and from the Apennine Peninsula were called Ponentini, while those from Germany were called Tedeschi. However, the Jews who were exiled from Spain and Portugal in 1492 and arrived in our area were called Sephardi (by the Hebrew name of Spain), and those from Western Europe by the Ashkenazi (by the Hebrew name of Germany). From 1817 the records and the list of born children were kept. Census records were made in the Jewish community in Split during the 19th century, in 1837 and 1855. At the beginning of the XX century, in 1903, a census was also made. In addition, records of the married and deaths were kept. In 1918, family statistics were compiled. All of these lists are preserved, partly located in the Registry Office of the City of Split, some in the Jewish Community, and the censuses from the years 1837, 1855 and 1903 are in the Jewish History Museum in Belgrade. Using the available lists and registers of births, weddings and deaths, lists of surnames of Split Jews were made, with one or two families from nearby places also included, as they are registered in the books. The following places are included: Makarska, Metković, Novi near Trogir, Rijeka, Sinj, Supetar, Šibenik, Vela Luka and Zadar.en
