Položaj Jevreja u Sjedinjenim državama Amerike
The position of the Jews in the United States of America
In September 1654, 24 people arrived in the port of New Amsterdam on the small ship "St. Charles". They claimed to be members of the Portuguese nation, of the Jewish faith and had to leave the Recife settlement in Brazil for persecution by the Catholic Church, or the Inquisition. Refugees were granted permission to stay in New Amsterdam and thus created the first Jewish settlement in the territory of today's the United States. A short time later (1664) the English took over the Dutch colony on the east coast of the American continent. New Amsterdam changed its name to New York. From then until the end of the 18th century, the influx of Jews did not stop, although it was never large. Most of the newcomers were Sephardim and many of them were former maranos.
