The text of senior rabbi Dr. Julius Diamant is a continuation of earlier work on the history of Jewish communities in Croatia, which was published in the Almanac in 1925. In that paper, it was pointed out that the Zemun religious community is the oldest religious community in Croatia. At the beginning of the 19th century, in 1811, the community of Varaždin was founded, and a few years later the community of Zagreb. Dr. Diamant states that there are no even older religious communities in this area and that the existing, newly established ones lack schools, beneficial rabbis, and tradition. The existing communities were founded by spiritually and materially poor immigrants who in their previous domiciles, as members of the lower strata of the Jewish population, had no influence on the management of their main communities and they were not aware of the essence of the existence of a religious community. Self-will reigned in the communities and the results of the work depended on the quality of its members, administration, and rabbis. Dr. Diamant cites several examples in which he explains the position and historical role of the rabbis, hoping that with the growing idea of Zionism, the situation will significantly improve.sr
