Abstract
Računa se da je Jevreja u Somboru 1940. godine bilo 1.200, eventualno do 1.250. Njihovi preci su dolazili iz obližnijih sela. Uz privrednike, Sombor je u Jevrejima dobio i svoju intelektualnu elitu. Mnogi od njih bili su inženjeri, advokati, prosvetni radnici. U Somboru su venčavani mladenci, rađana su deca, kao što su preci od 1806. godine sahranjivani na Jevrejskom groblju, lociranom na početku puta za šumu "Šikara". Najstarije matrikule o Jevrejima u Somboru vode se od 1851. godine, beležene su na nemačkom i herbejskom jeziku a kasnije na mađarskom i srpskom...
By 1940, there were between 1,200 and 1,250 Jews in Sombor. Their ancestors came from nearby villages. Along with merchants, Sombor also got its intellectual elite among the Jews. Many of them were engineers, lawyers, educators. Newlyweds were married in Sombor, children were born, just as ancestors from 1806 were buried in the Jewish cemetery, located at the beginning of the road to the "Šikara" forest. The oldest records on Jews in Sombor have been kept since 1851, they were recorded in German and Hebrew, and later in Hungarian and Serbian...
