Elaborating on the project "Revitalization of Small Jewish Communities in Serbia", the editors of "Pinkas" offered to members of the Jewish community, mostly in small communities, several short, interesting texts on Jewish topics, suitable for reading and organizing conversations in communities. The Commission for Culture and Education of the Federation and the Project Board printed texts in notebooks (pinks) on topics from Jewish history (general and Yugoslav), art and science, problems of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, Jewish identity, etc. One of these texts is "Jewish Intelligentsia and its Jewishness“ by Arthur Herzberg, which explained the fact that the modern form of rebellious Jewish intelligence has existed since the middle of the seventeenth century, from the generation of Sabatai Zvi and Spinoza. Sabataj Zvi appeared within Judaism as an activist of Kabbalah who predicted the end of the world. A lot of Jews for a moment believed that he was the Messiah and that the day he had predicted was near. Even after the great debacle, when that did not happen, and the world still remained as it always was, full of pain and suffering, there were still those who believed in it. The becoming of a modern, mostly rebellious intelligentsia, however, was basically influenced by Baruch Spinoza's philosophy. Historians of Jewish philosophy have worked hard to prove that Spinoza's critique of the Bible, with all its radicalism, is based on rabbinic sources, and even that his nationalism and universalism connected with late medieval philosophers. However, all this has only historical significance. Spinoza did not write Hebrew for the Jews but Latin for the whole world. He presented himself as a philosopher when he did not commit loyalty to a particular community or tradition, although he never left his Jewish identity, even when the rabbis of Amsterdam excluded him from Judaism...en
